Summary

Voyageur Outward Bound School (VOBS) is a charter of Outward Bound USA, the leading provider of experiential and outdoor education for youth and adults. VOBS reaches over 2,000 students annually and has been serving its mission-changing lives through challenge and discovery-for over 50 years. At VOBS we provide experiences that challenge an individual's own perceptions of what is possible, offering everything from multi-week expeditions to single day programs. We operate programs at our basecamp in Ely, MN (Homeplace), the Twin Cities Center, and in the Big Bend region of Texas. The Intercept Program Manager (IPM) is based at Homeplace, just outside Ely, MN. The IPM is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the VOBS Intercept program, facilitating the Intercept Family Seminars, and for overseeing the training and use of curriculum for all youth and young adult courses. The IPM is also an integral member of the summer management team who assists with oversight of day-to-day base-camp operations, serves as 'on-call' to oversee field evacuations, and provides ongoing leadership to field staff and to the Homeplace community. The IPM also acts as a Course Director in the shoulder season(s) and field instructor/staff trainer on an as needed basis.

Duties and Responsibilities

? Management of VOBS Intercept Program

  • o Oversee all Intercept program operations and to deliver consistent outcomes for the Intercept program in line with the mission, purpose and, core values of Outward Bound.
  • o Responsible for conducting and managing high quality, professional Family Seminars at the conclusion of all Intercept courses. This includes delivering lectures, facilitating conferences and other activities, mentoring staff, supporting families, and coordinating all logistics for staff, students, and families. o Supervise Intercept Course Directors.
  • o Design and lead one or more annual pre-season trainings including but not limited to Student Management Skills and Intercept specific training. Provide relevant trainings to Intercept staff throughout the season to continue to ensure quality and safety.
  • o Manage and organize service projects for the Intercept program. o Spend time in the field visiting student groups, mentoring Course Directors and instructional staff, and assessing quality and safety of the Intercept Program (not more than 10%) o Maintain close communication with the management team regarding logistics and staffing during service projects and course ends for 28-day and semester courses.
  • o Collaborate with the Staffing Director regarding staff performance and professional development. Be able to assess staff and make recommendations around pairings and promotions.
  • o Oversee the maintenance and inventory of all paperwork associated with Intercept. o Visit the Texas basecamp once annually (not to exceed 4 weeks) to assess the Texas Intercept program, provide training to Texas Intercept CDs and Texas Program Director, and ensure program consistency across the basecamps.
  • o Engage in occasional outreach and manage partnerships between VOBS and other agencies (not to exceed 10%)

? Member of Program Management Team

  • Serve as a primary member of the On-Call and Emergency Response team for field problems and emergencies, including managing evacuations and early departures, in support of and/or in the absence of Course Directors.
  • On-call approximately 1.25 days per week.
  • Serve as a liaison between VOBS and students' guardians in support of and/or in the absence of Course Directors when on call.
  • Participate in weekly management team meetings.
  • Provide community leadership by serving as a role model and exemplifying Outward Bound's core values.
  • Attend weekly Course Director meetings occasionally as the representative from the Ely Summer Management Team. o Work with the program director and associate program director to review, revise, and design curriculum.
  • Work with program director and associate program director to develop and facilitate pre-season and mid-season training for field staff aimed at staff engagement, staff development, and addressing emerging training needs.
  • Live on-site at Ely basecamp during the peak season.

? Other Duties

  • Serve as a course director, field instructor, and staff trainer in the field as necessary (no more than 15%).
  • Spend time in the field visiting student groups, mentoring Course Directors and instructional staff, and assessing program quality and safety (no more than 5%).
  • Supervise course directors.
  • Occasionally site-manage whitewater kayak, whitewater canoe, rock climbing, or high ropes activities.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Ely Summer PD.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, verbal, and writing skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, and ability to work well in a team setting.
  • Strong facilitation skills and confidence facilitating challenging conversations with staff, student groups, and families.
  • Confident public speaker.
  • Ability to make decisions, be creative, and respond independently.
  • Dynamic educator with strong initiative and an effective staff trainer.
  • Ability to be an inspiring and involved community leader.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize many tasks.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure.
  • Willingness to spend time in field (not more than 20%) evaluating staff, course directing, or occasionally instructing.
  • Computer proficiency, particularly with Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Wilderness First Responder certification.

Education and Work Experience

  • 3-5 years experience in the outdoor education/experiential learning field or any similar combination of education and experience.
  • Strong leadership skills and demonstrated proficiency as a Course Director for Intercept courses in the Boundary Water Canoe Area (preferred).
  • Strong instructional skills and demonstrated proficiency working with an at-risk youth population (required).

Compensation & Benefits

  • This is an 11-month position based at Homeplace in Ely, Minnesota.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience within the Program Manager starting pay range.
